New York City FC lose out on Belmont Park site to New York Islanders

New York City FC have failed in their bid to secure a site for a new stadium on the grounds of Belmont Park racetrack.

The MLS franchise, who currently host matches at Yankee Stadium, had hoped to build their own stadium in Elmont on Long Island.

But the bidding process has been won by the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, who are now set to move out of Brooklyn and back closer to their previous home.

The Islanders played at the Nassau Coliseum in Hempstead from 1972 until 2015 but have spent the last two seasons sharing Barclays Center with the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.

They have struggled for support since leaving Long Island and are last in average attendance this season - a number of the arena's seats are also unsuitable for viewing ice hockey games.

Their new home is set to be constructed on vacant and little-used parking lots on the Belmont Park site which hosts the third leg of the American Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes in June.

New York City FC entered MLS in 2015 and have been looking for a permanent stadium site since.

They attracted an average home attendance of nearly 30,000 at Yankee Stadium in their inaugural campaign but that slipped to 22,643 in 2017.
